Young volunteers join Quang Nam beach cleanup

A group of about 20 children, aged between 6 and 15, in the central province of Quang Nam has been voluntarily cleaning up a local beach every weekend.

The children are from the Green Volunteer Team in Hoa Trung Village, Tam Ky Commune. For the past two years, they have got up early at weekends to collect rubbish at Tam Thanh Beach.

Tam Thanh Beach, famous for its mural village, has become a favourite destination for visitors to Quang Nam.

The leader of the team is Le Dung, head of Hoa Trung Village in Tam Thanh Commune. According to Dung, the squad was established in 2022 with only six members, but the number has now grown to over 20.

Nguyen Tuong Nghi, 13, from Hoa Trung Village, said that he finds it very meaningful to join the volunteer group. Every weekend, he wakes up early for the beach cleanup. After the work is done, the beach looks beautiful, and everyone is happy.

Dung said that the local residents are very aware of the importance of not discharging rubbish into the environment. Most of the waste is brought ashore by high tides. The authorities have mobilised additional forces to assist his team with the rubbish collection efforts.

The team was recently honoured for their efforts in environmental protection by Tam Ky People’s Committee. 

Truong Thanh Khoi, Chairman of Tam Thanh Commune, hopes that the team's model will be widely expanded across Quang Nam in the coming time.
