The mud and soil come from a waste dump and resettlement area of the Van Ninh-Cam Lo Expressway project in Gio Linh District.

The debris spill followed recent heavy rains and flooding in the central region. As a result, a 1,080-square-metre plot of farmland belonging to Ho Van Tho's family in Linh Truong Commune was covered by soil and mud.
“Our rice fields have been completely buried by soil and debris. We hope the authorities will quickly come up with a solution to address the situation and provide support to local people,” Tho said.

Many other plots of farmland in Linh Truong Commune have also been ravaged by mud.
According to local residents and authorities, the waste dump of the highway project has not yet been reinforced to prevent erosion. So, during torrential rains, the debris often flows into nearby fields.
Around two hectares of farmland belonging to 15 households in Linh Truong Commune have been affected by the mud spill.
The highway project investor Truong Thinh Group said that the firm will review the losses to assist them. It will also arrange excavators to clear the mud and soil and restore the damaged fields.
The company will build embankments around the waste dump to prevent erosion. Ditches will also be dug around the area to prevent soil and debris from being washed into the fields.
