Hanoi lakes battle severe pollution

Truc Bach Lake in Tay Ho District has been struggling with pollution for many years. People who live near the lake often suffer from the water’s bad odour.

 Dung, 71, said that for years, sewage pipes discharged directly into Truc Bach Lake. The foul odour is persistent, particularly during weather changes, forcing the locals to shut their windows.

A representative from the Ba Dinh District People's Committee stated that the entire Ngo Xa Peninsula currently lacks wastewater treatment. Tay Ho District has planned to launch a wastewater collection project by the first quarter of next year.

The wastewater will be gathered and transported to the treatment station on Tran Vu and Nguyen Truong To streets and then integrated into the city's wastewater system.

West Lake is facing a similar issue, with several sections of the lake being covered in rubbish, leading to a persistent unpleasant odour.

Tay Ho District authorities have proposed financial support of VND2 trillion from the city to dredge and restore the environment of West Lake.

Meanwhile, Giang Vo Lake in Dong Da District is seriously polluted with oil slicks floating on the surface. Local authorities have signed a contract with a company to regularly clean the lake's surface.
