1. American Avant Garde Films of the 1940s-50s: Maya Deren

DOCLAB is introducing Maya Deren (1917-1961), an important American avant-garde filmmaker and film theorist of the 1940s and 1950s after “Man with a Movie Camera” (Soviet Union, 1929) and a series of Western European Avant Garde films of the 1920s and 30s (Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Hans Richter, Viking Eggeling, Fernand Ledger).

Deren - also a choreographer, dancer, poet, writer and photographer – was a key figure in the creation of a New American Cinema, highlighting personal, experimental, underground film. Her first film Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) – among films to be screened - is considered to be one of the first important American experimental films. It provided a model for self-financed 16 mm production and distribution, as well as established an aesthetic model of what experimental cinema could do.

Maya Deren will be on screen at 6.30 PM, on December 17 at Goethe-Institute Hanoi.

2. Art Lounge

The Art Lounge features the art of Chinese photographer Chen Man with a live graffiti performance by Linkfish and music by DJ Romain Rou.



The event will be held at The Bui Gallery, 23 Ngo Van So at 7PM on December 18.

3. “From Books to Movies” program

It is the second screening of the program which includes film screening and discussion with guests - Director Bui Thac Chuyen and Editor of Nha Nam Media Company Cao Viet Dung.

The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) was established with the purposes of designing and implementing programs to assist and develop movie talents and other activities for the development of Vietnamese cinema.

The program “From Books to Movies” will be held at 2PM, December 19 at TPD Center, 22A Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi.

4. DJ Goldie

Noi Zee presents the one and only Goldie who is well known as the star of James Bond 007 - “The World Is Not Enough” and “Snatch” with Brad Pitt, the ex boyfriend of Bjork & Naomi Campbell, the man behind “Timeless” - one of the biggest selling electronic music records ever.


Goldie is regarded by D&B purists as one of the best DJs on the circuit… impeccable taste & excellent showmanship see Goldie headlining top clubs the world over on a weekly basis - more so than ever in 2009.

The program will be held at 9PM, at Cage Bar, 3A Ton Duc Thang, Ho Chi Minh City on December 19.

5. Tadioto’s 1st Anniversary

The entertainment program includes performance by Thanh Lam, Nguyen Van Cuong, Scott Ezell, Linh Dung & belly dance.


As part of the event, there will be exhibition of Boris Zuliani’s images of Morocco and video projections, crows of Tokyo.

Tadioto’s first anniversary will be organised at 8PM, December 20. Address: 113 Trieu Viet Vuong, Hanoi.

6. The Nature of Light and the Phenomenon of Installation art

This informal panel discussion will focus on the phenomenon of installation art, using Hap Tivey’s artistic practice as a departure point for further discussion on the history and development of one of the 20th Century’s most significant art forms.

Discussion shall be facilitated by Zoe Butt (Curator and Director, Programs and Development, San Art). Attending the discussion, there will be visiting guests Hap Tivey (artist); Trevor Smith (curator, writer) and Nguyen Nhu Huy (artist/curator).

The discussion will be held at 10AM, December 20 at Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University, 5 Phan Dang Luu.

Hap Tivey’s solo exhibition ‘Light Shreds: 2000 Car Paintings’ will open at San Art on 31 Dec.
