Ban Tuan Van, 50, lives with his wife and their son's family in a small house built on a hill in Nguyen Binh District. On rainy days, the small dirt path to his house can only be accessed by foot.
The man, who is from the Dao ethnic group, said that he built this house in 2012 after his old cottage collapsed in a storm with support from relatives and neighbours.
"We built this house with just VND10 million (USD394) from trash timber," Van said. "It has badly deteriorated and may collapse at any time. We can't sleep inside on rainy nights as water may come in from many holes in the roof."
The man, who has been struggling with poliomyelitis since facing a high fever at the age of 10, cannot do hard work. He said he only wishes for a firm house that withstands strong winds and heavy rains.
"Both I and my wife have weak health and can only grow some rice and vegetables on our small farmland," Van said. "Our son and daughter-in-law also do odd jobs to earn a modest income. Meanwhile, their only child is suffering from serious malnutrition. We can only earn enough for food while a new house is just a dream."
The head of Na An Village, Nguyen Van Duyen, said that Van's family needed a new house as their old one had severely deteriorated. However, they cannot afford it.
"We're a poor area, and people can only help them with their manual work," the official said. "We hope Van's family will receive financial support from kind donors to build a new house, and we can help them with the construction work here."
Dantri Newspaper has begun a campaign to build 100 houses for disadvantaged people nationwide between now and next year.
