Quang Ngai authorities modify a mountain's slope geometry to protect a residential area and a road from being threatened by landslides.
According to local authorities, landslides occurred in the Van Ca Vai Mountain in 2021. They had invested VND3 billion in construction work to prevent them, but the problems continued during the rainy season in 2023, affecting a road and some households.
This year, the district has decided to invest in a large landslide prevention project estimated to cost VND14 billion. The project, which started in mid-July and was expected to be completed by the end of October, focuses on modifying the slope geometry, building concrete walls, and installing water collecting systems on the 56-metre-tall mountain.
Talking about the project, Le Hong Anh, Deputy Director of Son Ha District Land Fund Investment, Construction and Development Management Board, said that they considered several options, including relocating five households in the landslide-prone area, but finally agreed on this construction project.
"Some households don't want to move," he explained. "And besides protecting these five households, we also want to protect a road under the mountain which connects the district's centre with Son Bao Commune."
