Authorities in Hoi An City, in the central province of Quang Nam, have planned to create two model streets that will be free from plastic bags and waste, as well as begging and intrusive tourist harassment.

Under the plan, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Tran Phu will be piloted as exemplary streets this year.

Hoi An City will encourage residents and local businesses along these streets to co-operate in implementing the plan. The roads will be upgraded to harmonise with the charm of the old town, creating a safe and civilised shopping and tourism area.

Shops will be better organised, and advertising displays will be arranged in accordance with regulations. Business owners are required to behave politely and courteously towards customers and ensure that all of their products are clearly labeled.

The authorities will take drastic measures to eliminate the harassment of tourists, begging, street vending, and noise pollution. Tran Phu and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai will also become the first pedestrian streets in Hoi An to say no to plastic bags and waste.

If the trial is successful, the city will expand this initiative to encompass the entire ancient town and its buffer zone by 2025.

As many as 236 business services are located along Tran Phu and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai streets, accounting for 4 percent of the city's total businesses in Hoi An. Notably, both of them attract a large number of tourists for sightseeing and shopping daily.
