A supermarket on Hanoi's Pham Van Dong Street is selling Chinese red grapes for just VND59,000 (USD2.30) a kilo and black grapes at VND119,000 per kilo, which are two to four times cheaper than similar grapes imported from Australia or the US.

A customer, Le Linh, said she bought a 10-kilo box of black grapes because of their low price.

"A staff member at the supermarket told me that it's peak season for grapes in China, so the fruits are of the best quality and are well priced," Linh said. "I bought a big box and would send some to my children and friends."

Besides supermarkets, many varieties of Chinese grapes, including ruby, green, red, and black, can be seen dominating street stalls or vendors' trolleys, all being sold at shockingly cheap prices.

Hong Hanh, a trader in the Cau Giay District, said she switched to selling Chinese grapes during their prime season as they are of good quality and priced well.

"China has successfully planted many varieties of grapes, and their prices are much lower than those of the same kinds imported from Japan, Australia, or the US," she said. "So we're turning to selling Chinese grapes, especially during their peak season. I'm selling hundreds of kilos of Chinese grapes every day."

A Ministry of Industry and Trade report shows that China is currently the biggest supplier of vegetables and fruits to Vietnam, with a value reaching USD794.70 million in 2023, accounting for 40.50 per cent of Vietnam's imported vegetables and fruits.

Apples were Vietnam's top imported fruit in terms of value last year, at USD237.10 million, accounting for 21.8 percent, followed by grapes at 158.40 million, or 14.60 percent
