Thousands of households in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh's Van Don District have been assigned water areas to rebuild their fish farms, which were destroyed by the recent Typhoon Yagi.

Van Don, the biggest fish-raising hub in Quang Ninh, was severely hit by Typhoon Yagi. One thousand two hundred fish cages were damaged, 130 boats were sunk, and over 32,000 tonnes of fish were lost, leaving a total loss of VND2.28 trillion (USD91.38 million).

According to Dao Van Vu, vice chairman of the Van Don District People's Committee, over 1,000 households have been allocated 6,000 hectares of water area to rebuild their farms following the typhoon.

"About 50 percent of farms have been rebuilt," he said. "An additional 7,000 hectares will be allocated to another 1,000 hectares before the end of this year. Farmers will also be given bank loans with preferential rates to develop their business."

Quang Ninh Province has started planning and allocating water areas for farmers since 2018 to improve their management, develop the local fish-raising sector, and prevent environmental pollution. Farmers are also given support when facing natural disasters.

According to the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee, over 45,240 hectares of water are allocated to local fish farmers.

Fisheries make up 50 percent of the province's agriculture sector.
