Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper present gifts to teachers and students in Con Co Island in the central province of Quang Ngai on October 15.

Lying some 18 nautical miles from the mainland, Con Co is the country's smallest island with a total area of just 2.30 square kilometres. The island currently has just one school, the Hoa Phong Ba Kindergarten and Primary School, which hosts 11 kindergarten children and three first-grade students. Meanwhile, older children are now still having to go to the mainland to study. They are mostly children of fishermen and military officers based on the island whose lives are still very difficult.

Dantri Newspaper has recently launched a programme to call for support from readers for the children and teachers on Con Co and has gathered some cash, food, study equipment, and other necessities.

Besides sending gifts to teachers and students here, the newspaper has decided to support three students with VND9 million a year until they finish primary school.

The gifts were first brought to them during a visit in January this year. And the newspaper returned on October 15 with more gifts for teachers and students as the new school year has just started.

Ho Thi Truc Mai is among three students who have been sponsored by the newspaper. Mai's family is facing lots of difficulties with father being disabled while mother having no stable job.

Receiving the support from Dantri, Mai expressed her thanks to Dantri and all the kind donors and shared that her life has become much better thanks to the donation.

Teacher Phan Van Quang from Cua Viet Town Primary School also sent his sincere thanks to Dantri and other donors for supporting local teachers and students.

"Your gifts are valuable to us and we'll try more to improve teaching and studying quality in the island," he said.
