Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper co-operate with authorities in Phu Yen to start constructing a house for a poor local elderly man, Nguyen Ngoc Gioi, on October 6.

The 45-square-metre house with a living room, a kitchen, and two bedrooms will be built to replace the old deteriorating house of Nguyen Ngoc Gioi and his two small grandchildren.

The house will cost VND170 million to build, of which Dantri contributed VND140 million, and the rest came from some donors in Phu Yen.

Attending the foundation-breaking ceremony for his new house on October 6, Gioi was moved to tears by the overwhelming support he received from Dantri, kind donors, and local authorities.

The elderly man shared that he now has to care for two small granddaughters, aged eight and one after their mother left them.

"My daughter returned to me and my wife when she was pregnant and then left her children for us shortly after giving birth," the man said. "We know nothing about the children's father; their mother has never contacted us again. My wife suddenly died from a stroke in May."

Gioi sincerely thanked all the donors and local authorities for helping him and the children build a new house.

"Our old house has been badly damaged over time and now no longer safe to live in," Gioi said. "I'm thrilled that we're going to have a new house and no longer have to worry about the rain and storms."

Gioi's old house has badly deteriorated.

Attending the ceremony, the vice chairman of Xuan Phuoc Commune, Nguyen Anh Tuan, thanked Dantri and kind donors for supporting poor people in his area.

"Gioi has tried to do various odd jobs and earn modest income to raise his grandchildren," the official said. "We'll ask the contractor to try to complete construction within a month so they can move into their new house before the rainy season."
