Schools in ten northern provinces and cities will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday as local authorities are still trying to deal with the huge damage caused by Typhoon Yagi.

Many houses have their roofs blown off by Typhoon Yagi in Haiphong City on September 7.

On Sunday, the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee asked local schools to remain closed for at least one more day so that they could be cleaned and repaired.

The neighbouring city of Haiphong has also allowed half a million students to stay home on Monday until further notice.

Quang Ninh and Haiphong were the hardest-hit localities by the storm, which ripped through northern Vietnam on Saturday and was reported the most powerful one in the East Sea in the past 30 years.

Many areas in these two localities still face power and water cuts, as many electricity and water systems were broken during the storm.

Meanwhile, some northern mountainous provinces, including Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh, Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Son La, Yen Bai, and Cao Bang, have also announced the continued closure of all local schools on Monday and Tuesday due to rising flash floods triggered by heavy rain following the storm.

Rescue forces evacuate people amid rising flood in Yen Bai Province on the evening of September 8.

The Lao Cai Provincial Department of Education and Training has asked local schools to watch out for landslides and have proper solutions.

On Sunday afternoon, a fatal landslide triggered by heavy rain occurred in Sapa Town, killing six people and injuring nine others.

In Thai Nguyen, schools in some districts allowed students to stay home on Monday until further notice to ensure safety.

As of 6 pm on September 8, Typhoon Yagi had left 24 dead in Vietnam, including six in Lao Cai, five in Quang Ninh, four in Hanoi, four in Hoa Binh, two in Haiphong, one each in Yen Bai, Hai Duong, and Lang Son, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
