Over 5,250 traffic fatalities in first six months

As many as 5,255 people were killed and nearly 9,600 others injured in more than 12,320 traffic accidents in Vietnam in the first half of 2024, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

The figures showed a sharp rise of 1,841 in the number of accidents and 2,707 in injuries while there was a fall of 702 in fatalities compared to the same period last year.

June alone saw approximately 1,900 traffic accidents, leaving 849 people dead and injuring 1,373 others. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of accidents increased by 140, the number of injuries rose by 194 while the number of deaths decreased by 92.

Most of the accidents reported in the first half occurred on the road with 12,225 cases, leaving nearly 5,200 deaths and over 9,580 injuries. There were 66 railway accidents, killing 48 and injuring 10; and 27 accidents on waterways, causing 15 deaths, and five injuries.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam received 101 mandatory safety reports during this period, and 42 incidents including 26 relating to a technical failure, two due to a bird strike, and 13 due to flight crew.
