The farm, which has been in operation since early this year, has caused severe environmental pollution in the area, prompting immediate action.

In a decision sent to the Agri-Vina Agriculture Investment Company, Le Duc Giang, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, asked the company to conduct thorough checks on its operations and address all the processes causing pollution.

Earlier, thousands of local households complained about severe environmental pollution caused by the large-scale pig farm since it began operations early this year.

Agri-Vina Agriculture Investment Company was given a licence in late 2023 to operate the farm, which has a capacity of 60,000 pigs and covers 52,000 square metres.

Although the company is currently only raising 30,000 pigs in its first stage, thousands of residents in Tan Phuc, Tam Van, and Lang Chanh Town communes have already complained about the bad odour that has badly affected their lives.

Regarding the problem, Le Duc Tien, vice chairman of Lang Chanh District People's Committee, said they had investigated the following complaints from the public and found that the farm had not adequately treated its waste, causing foul odour in surrounding areas.

"We've worked with the farm and reached an agreement that they would remove the pigs and temporarily halt their operation to solve the environmental problems from June 5 to August 5," the official said. "However, they've yet to follow the agreement and the pollution is worsening, making residents angry".

Representatives from Agri-Vina Agriculture Investment Company recently met with residents and asked for an additional two months to resolve the problems. However, the residents refused.

Following work with concerned agencies on the issue on July 2, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee Vice Chairman Le Duc Giang asked the company to suspend operations from July 30 and deal with all environmental pollution caused by its activities.
