The country has 151,000 hectares of durian, which is expected to produce 1.5 million tonnes this year.

Although durian trees produce fruits all year round, the main crop lasts from April to September. At present, Monthong durian is priced at VND90,000 per kilo, and the Ri6 variety at VND60,000 per kilo.

The General Secretary of the Vietnam Vegetable and Fruit Association (Vinafruit), Dang Phuc Nguyen, said that durian exports have sharply increased this year.

"Durian export revenues increased to USD450 million in May, up 107 percent from last month's figure and up 34 percent compared to the same period last year," Nguyen shared. "The revenues reached USD600 million in June."

Statistics from VINAFRUIT showed that durian brought the most significant export revenues in all vegetable and fruit products, at approximately USD1.5 billion.

Nguyen added that durian export revenues may reach USD3 billion by the end of this year. And China continued to be the biggest importer of Vietnamese durian. A report from the Chinese Customs Department showed that in the first four months of 2024, the country imported 79,300 tonnes of durians from Vietnam at USD369.80 million.

Farmers in Vietnam's durian hub of the Mekong Delta region are seeing poor crops this year, with just 15 tonnes per hectare. However, thanks to the high durian prices of between VND60,000 and 100,000 per kilo, they're making profits of between VND700 million and VND1 billion a hectare.
