As many as 200 monkeys have plagued a residential area in the southern central province of Khanh Hoa.

The monkeys often come to households around the Nui Be Hill area, to take food and damage property.

Some years ago, some people in Ngoc Diem Village, Ninh Hoa Town, saw some monkeys swimming in the sea, so they took them home. When the monkeys grew up, they were released in the Nui Be Hill area.

The monkeys live naturally around the hill and the number has reached nearly 200. They usually disturb 60 local households.

Hoang Xuan Thanh, 57, who lives under the foot of Nui Be Hill, said the monkeys often break into his home to snatch fruit. “The monkeys can take fruit from our family’s altar in just a few minutes,” he added.

Local residents worried that the monkeys could attack them, particularly children.

Bui Thi Thuy Lien, chairwoman of Ninh Hoa Commune’s People’s Committee, informed Ninh Ich Town’s authorities of the monkey's appearance.

An expert from Monkey Island from Khanh Hoa said that food in the Nui Be Hill area has become scarce, so monkeys flood the nearby residential area to seek food. He suggested supplying food for the monkeys as a temporary measure. The locality needs to consider using the monkeys as a tourism product.
