Opera by British composer to be performed on Hanoi stage

Audiences in Hanoi will have an opportunity to enjoy ‘The Little Sweep’- a short opera by British composer Benjamin Britten in February at the Hanoi Opera House

Audiences in Hanoi will have an opportunity to enjoy ‘The Little Sweep’- a short opera by British composer Benjamin Britten in February 2010 at the Hanoi Opera House, before the Lunar New Year, according to the British Council in Vietnam.

This moving “Oliver Twist”- inspired story of friendship and sympathy and the hope for a better life for children in harsh Dickensian England will be performed by the Vietnam National Opera & Ballet Theatre under the baton of British conductor Graham Sutcliffe.

The story: Sam, the sweep boy is sold into service and bullied by his elders. One day, when the sweeps come to work for a rich family in Iken Hall, the children of this family take pity on the poor boy and decide to rescue him from the other sweeps.

The opera will be performed on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 February 2010 at the Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien.

Tickets are available free of charge and can be collected from 26 January 2010 from the British Council, 20 Thuy Khue and the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre, 11 Ngo Nui Truc.

The performance is in Vietnamese with English subtitles
The opera is suitable for children over the age of 10
