Nguyen Thi Nu, 39, from Nghia Hai Commune in Nghia Hung District, is caring for her 9-year-old son, Quang Phong, at the National Acupuncture Hospital.
According to Nu, her son suffered from oxygen deprivation right after being born at a hospital in Nam Dinh. The doctors immediately transferred him to Hanoi for treatment.

After more than 10 days of intensive care, Tran Quang Phong was returned to his family. However, when he was three months old, Nu noticed that her baby's eyes had no reflexes, his limbs were stiff, his body was limp, and he remained lying wherever he was placed.
She took her son to the hospital for a check-up. After being informed by doctors that Quang Phong had cerebral palsy and would need long-term treatment, the mother felt in complete despair. She screamed and ran all over the hospital, then collapsed unconscious.
Since Quang Phong started treatment at the hospital, Nu and her husband, Tran Quang Phi, had to put aside all their farming work and rent a small room. Every day, Nu cares for their child in the hospital, while Phi works at an industrial park in Bac Ninh.
Phi's modest income is insufficient to cover the son's treatment, so the couple has had to borrow money from various sources. The family's debts have reached VND200 million (USD7,889).
Doctor Pham Duc Minh from the National Acupuncture Hospital said that Phong has been undergoing treatment since he was just 11 months old. Although the child's condition has improved, the treatment will continue to be long-term and expensive.
Nu had intended to temporarily suspend her son's treatment due to the family's financial difficulties, but doctors advised her to try to continue the treatment.
