Vietnam to export rice to Solomon Islands using new bags

Solomon Islands' long time rice importer Solrice will start to import its rice products directly from Vietnam with a new look packaging bag.

Solomon Islands' long time rice importer Solrice will towards the end of this month start to import its rice products directly from Vietnam with a new look packaging bag, the local newspaper Solomon Star reported Monday.

Brian Hutchinson, General Manager of Solraise, said the new stock will arrive in few weeks time directly from Vietnam.

"We will have the new stock being shipped in directly from Vietnam," he said.

The new stock will also see new packaging bags being used, he said.

A sample of the bag shown to the Solomon Star saw the new look bag covered in plastic and look much more brighter than the old one.

Mr Hutchinson said the bags can last long and withstand dry and wet weather condition.

He said the bag is designed in way which can withstand rain and sea because it has plastic around it.

He said in the rural areas most of the rice are being transported by boats and during bad weather the rice can go bad if it get wet.

'It this new bags are designed to withstand wet weather condition such as sea or rain unlike the old ones," he said.

He said in the country, bags are useful for gardening, fishing, tools, students and betel nut.

Currently Solrice is selling the old stock and once the old stock is finished, the new one should arrive in new look bags.

In the past Solrice imports its rice from United States and then bagged in Lae, Papua New Guinea (PNG) before being shipped in to Honiara which is more expensive.

But with the new source of supply from Vietnam, customers expects good taste and price.

The new package bag will only be for 10kg&20kg rice.

One and five kilogram rice will still remain in clear plastic bags, he said.
