Vietnam’s young generations should follow Professor Ngo Bao Chau, the Fields winner, to devote themselves to science.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized this at a welcome ceremony for Ngo Bao Chau at the My Dinh National Convention Centre on August 29, adding that he expects Chau’s honour should be multiplied.

The Fields prize was the pride of not only Chau, but also of teachers, students, and the entire Vietnamese people, said the Government leader.

He expressed his thanks to French and US scientists for fostering Prof. Chau to his success today.

Vietnam should build an ideal study society and a mechanism that respects the talents like prof. Chau, said Mr. Dung.

Prior to the ceremony, thousands of students, many of whom are in prof. Chau’s former general school and University of Natural Sciences, lined up at the gate of the Convention Centre in a hope to meet the professor. They expressed their determination to follow his example.

Chau was really touched by their sentiments.

“It was touching to heart for me at catching the pride in the eyes of young students at the ceremony today,” Chau said.

On August 19, Prof. Chau became the first Vietnamese to win the award which is comparable to the Nobel prize for under-40 mathematicians.

He won the prize for his proof of the Fundamental Lemma in the theory of automorphic forms, by introducing new algebro-geometric methods.

“The Fields prize will breathe a new life into science and tertiary education in Vietnam,” said Prof. Chau as he received the award. He said that an education encouragement fund named Ngo Bao Chau would be founded in future.

He expressed thanks to the Party and Government as well as his teachers for helping him to receive this honour.

I hope Vietnam’s young generations will work hard and contribute more to the mathematic science in particular and the nation’s science in general, he concluded.
