Vietnam upholds its unwavering policy of promoting people’s fundamental rights, including the rights of women, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh has affirmed.

He was speaking at a press briefing on March 30 in reply to the media inquiry into Vietnam’s view about the US State Department’s International Women of Courage Award granted to Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, known as blogger Mother Mushroom (blog nickname Me Nam).

“Vietnam pursues its consistent policy of protecting and promoting people’s fundamental rights, including rights of the women. Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in human rights protection and improvement have been highly appreciated by the community. The US award given to an individual in detention for investigation of Vietnamese law violation is unobjective, irrelevant and detrimental to the development of bilateral relations," Binh said.

He commented on civil protection regarding a Vietnamese child murdered in Japan.

“Right after the incident, the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan has worked with Japanese agencies to ask for investigation. We believe that the murderer would be arrested shortly and face the weight of justice. This is sad news for all of us. Vietnam strongly denounced this appalling inhuman act and sent our heartfelt condolence to the victim family," the official stated.

About legal protection for Doan Thi Huong, a suspect in the death of Democratic People’s Republic of Korean citizen Kim Chol in Malaysia, Binh assured reporters that two Malaysian defence lawyers for Huong are highly capable and more information will be provided in a suitable time.

Regarding the arrest of 43 Vietnamese fishermen and three vessels in Solomon, Binh said the Vietnamese embassy in Australia and Solomon is working with Solomon authorities to verify the information and will take appropriate citizen protection measures.

Concerning information on China and the Philippines’ bilateral talks on the East Sea issue, Binh said Vietnam welcomes parties’ peaceful negotiation in line with international law.

Bilateral disputes should be resolved by bilateral talks while multilateral disputes must be settled through multilateral talks, he added.
