Storm Rai that hit Vietnam in the early morning of September 14 left heavy rains and floods that killed two and injured 33.
Heavy rain in Danang City
A farmer in Thua Thien-Hue Province fell into Truoi River at 1.30am, while another man was killed while checking a shrimp farming aerator. 13 people in Quang Trinh, 11 in Danang, eight in Quang Tri and one in Hue were injured. Over 1,000 hectares of rice field, 268 hectares of other crops and 84 houses were badly damaged.
Ha Tinh Province is seriously flooded by heavy rains and discharges from hydropower plants. Tran Dinh Hung, head of Huong Khe District Department of Education and Training, said many roads in the districts were deep under water, with 50 of 59 schools instructing pupils to remain at home.
Son Phuc, Son Thuy, Son Mai and Son Phu were flooded because of the Ngan Pho River’s water levels. "About 20,000 pupils who go to schools mostly in low-lying areas such as Huong Giang, Huong Thuy and Loc Yen communes have to stay home," he said. "We'll let pupils take a break until the floods subside."
The Department of Prevention of Natural Disasters in Central and Highland regions issued warnings about rising water levels, especially the Gianh River.
The storm led to the Song Bung 2 Hydropower Dam being breached. Two workers were swept away after the dam broke. Search and rescue forces are still looking for the missing workers.
Heavy rains have hit provinces from Danang to Binh Dinh since last night, quickly raising water levels in various rivers and causing floods. After moving inland, the storm quickly downgraded to a tropical depression.
