A tropical pressure has intensified to the north of the Spratly Islands in the East Sea, which may develop into a storm over central Vietnam within the next 24 hours.
According to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre, as of 1pm Sunday, the centre of the tropical pressure was to the north of the Spratly Islands with wind power of 40-50km/hour.
The centre said that that by 1pm today, the pressure centre would be around 300 kilometres from the coast of the central provinces of Khanh Hoa and Quang Ngai.
It is forecast that between 24 and 48 hours later, the tropical pressure could continue to develop into a storm which could ravage the central region of Vietnam, including Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa provinces.
Central provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai are expected to experience heavy rain from late September 12 to September 14.
Heavy rains may also lead to tornadoes from Binh Dinh to Binh Thuan in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam in the next 2-3 days.
The country is affected by an average of eight to 10 tropical storms between July and October annually which leave behind heavy material and human losses. This year, Vietnam has faced three storms.
