A 23 year-old woman from the central province of Nghe An who previously underwent four heart operations has been diagnosed with pancreas cancer.
Le Thi Hoai Thuong was diagnosed with heart disease when she was seven years old. Since then, she has had four operations, including having to live with a metal frame inside her chest to protect her heart.
Thuong is suffering from heart dieases and pancreas cancer.
Her parents divorced nearly 20 years ago and she and her younger brother live with her mother.
After the fourth heart operation, Thuong’s health condition became better, so she decided to go to the southern region to work at a garment company to support her family.
But, in August this year, she felt tired and had fever. She thought that her heart problems might have reoccurred, so she came to hospital for medical check-up. Surprisingly, doctors said these were symptoms of pancreas cancer.
Since she is now undergoing chemotherapy, Thuong has become weaker. She often has breathing difficulties, particularly at night. Her marriage has also failed.
Her mother has sold everything of value to the family, even the current small house where they are living in has been used as collateral with a local bank for loans.
Doctors said that it would cost around VND1 billion (USD47,619) for Thuong to benefit from stem cell transplants which could save her from the cancer, but this is completely beyond her family’s capacity.
