The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has asked Hanoi and nine other localities to strictly deal with the burning of solid waste and straw to help protect the environment.

Under the ministry’s document sent to Hanoi and the northern provinces of Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Ha Nam, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen and Bac Giang, the environmental pollution in these localities has recently been on the rise, affecting local people’s health.

Concerned agencies of these localities need to raise local awareness of environmental protection so that they can stop solid waste and post-harvest straw burning.

It is important for households to sign a commitment of not burning straw in fields. Instead, farmers should be instructed how to deal with straw in an environmentally-friendly way.

The authorities need to impose serious punishments on people who illegally burn solid waste and straw.

The traffic police of the localities have also been asked to fine vehicles which transport construction materials but do not have measures to protect the environment.

The leaders of localities have to take responsibility for environmental violations related to the burning of solid waste and straw and construction material transportation.
