HCM City to upgrade its oldest market

Traders at the 88-year-old Binh Tay Market have started packing things up to move out as the local authorities began work to renovate the oldest market in the city.

Traders at the 88-year-old Binh Tay Market have started packing things up to move out as the local authorities began work to renovate and upgrade the oldest market in the city on November 10.

Binh Tay Market in District 6 was set up by a Chinese trader in 1928. It was designed by a French architect but features East-Asian styles. In November 2015, it was recognised as a city architectural site.

However, time has damaged many parts and the market needs a renovation.

Traders will be relocated to a temporary market on the opposite of Binh Tay Market on Thap Muoi Street while the renovation is being carried out. 95% of the traders have registered kiosks at temporary markets and the relocation will be completed in a few days.

According to the authorities of District 6 and the managers of Binh Tay, they have 1,446 kiosks in which 369 kiosks are used as storage. It is estimated that the renovation will take up to a year with total investment of over VND104bn (USD4.72m). About 10 years worth of kiosk rental fees will be used to upgrade the market.
