The congestion lasted from the early morning until 10 am on the road linking Phap Van junction in Thanh Tri District and Pham Van Dong Street in Cau Giay District. The same problem has occurred on the road quite frequently in recent times.

The road is part of the capital city's 65-km Belt Road 3 which runs through the districts of Soc Son, Bac Tu Liem, Nam Tu Liem, Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai, Long Bien, Gia Lam and Dong Anh.

Last month, a five-hour traffic jam also occurred along a 10 km stretch of the elevated route following technical problems affecting an oil tanker.

Figures from the city show that about 20,000 motorbikes and 8,000 cars are registered every month. On average, nearly 1,000 new cars and motorbikes are added to the traffic every day.

It is estimated the city will have about one million cars and seven million motorbikes by 2020.
