Floods triggered by torrential rains over the past few days in the central and Central Highlands region have killed five, injured 17 and left 10 missing.

The victims were reported in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Dak Lak and Thua-Thien Hue provinces.

Floods and heavy rains have also caused 33 houses to collapse; damaged 131 houses and submerged nearly 30,000 houses. Up to 2,000 hectares of rice were flooded, while 9,570 heads of poultry were killed and swept away.

Many roads in Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and Kon Tum faced landslides; while lots of roads in Phu Yen, Nha Trang City in Khanh Hoa Province remain seriously inundated.

Hundreds of people had to take refuge on a railway section in Quy Nhon City Binh Dinh Province this morning to avoid the flooded roads. Train drivers have slowed their speeds and sounded their horns from a distance to provide notice to sheltering people.

Weather forecast said between now and November 11, the central provinces will experience more heavy rains with total rainfall estimated at between 50-100 mm. Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces are predicted to see rainfalls of between 100-250 mm.

The prime minister has urged authorities of the provinces, asking them to take proactive measures to respond to flooding, minimise human and property losses, and swiftly address the consequences of the floods.
