A father in Nam Dinh Province is in need of help for three of his sons who are all suffering from haemophilia, a rare bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn't clot properly.

Nguyen Van Truong said when his son was one year's old, he bit a toy and it tore his tongue.

"We couldn't stop the bleeding. My son kept crying, swallowed the blood and vomited. We panicked. We brought him to hospital but the details about this illness were so vague. So we had the second child and he also has the same disorder," Truong said.

After bringing two sons to the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in Hanoi that Truong understands more about this disorder. According to Truong, both of his son inherited the disorder from their mother. Truong and his wife decided to have another child, hoping for a healthy daughter. Unfortunately, their third son also inherited the disorder.

Truong is struggling to support the family and paying hospital charges for three children.

"Sometimes, after we had just left the hospital for about 100km, my son fell over and would bleed and we were forced to return to hospital. When there isn't enough money, we have no choice but keep the children home. The joints of my oldest son have deformed," he said.

Nguyen Thi Mai from the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion said it was important that the children were provided blood-clotting factors regularly or else it could lead to joint and muscle bleeding.

She said, "The patients will have walking difficulties or worse, they will be paralysed. They will suddenly find themselves unable to move, to work like normal and have to depend on other people. People with this disorder often bleed 18 times a year, people in severe condition will bleed up to 40 times a year. That means pretty much going to hospital at least once a week and that is too costly for many families."

Haemophilia can't be cured and need regular treatment. However, Truong said he didn't know how to cover everything with small rice fields.
