Chess masters set sights on gold

Vietnam’s chess team is set to win at least three gold medals at the 26th Southeast Asia Games in Indonesia this November.

Vietnam’s chess team is set to win at least three gold medals at the 26th Southeast Asia Games in Indonesia this November.

They will compete in nine events including blitz chess, men’s women’s blindfold chess, standard men’s and women’s doubles and Southeast Asian chess.

“The team is assigned to win three gold medals but players will do their best to surpass the goal,” coach Lam Minh Chau said.

Chau said Vietnam is able to win a gold medal at all events except for Southeast Asian chess (a combination of Myanmar, Thai and Cambodian chess styles).

Vietnam set a record at the chess competition at the 23th SEA Games in the Philippines in 2005 winning eight gold medals at all of its events.
