Cam Ranh Airport in Khanh Hoa Province yesterday held a groundbreaking ceremony to build a new international terminal.

The groundbreaking ceremony to build new international terminal was held on September 8. The terminal will mimic the design of a birds nest with two floors and cover 50,000 square metres. The USD179m terminal is designed to serve 2.5 million passengers in 2018 and 8 million passengers by 2030.
Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Nhat said it was necessary to build a new terminal and upgrade the airport to deal with severe overloading. He urged investors to complete the project on time.
Last year, Cam Ranh International Airport received over 2.7 million passengers in which 900,000 are international tourists. The airport's capacity is only 1.5 million tourists.
Khanh Hoa Province invested VND1.9trn in a new runway in March 2015 and in 2016 the Airports Corporation of Vietnam renovated and upgraded the international airport's capacity to 2.5 million tourists per year. But the number of tourists also increased.
In the first eight months of this year, the airport received 3.3 million tourists including 1.5 million international tourists.
