At 5.30 pm that day, the fishing vessel ran aground about 200 metres off the coast of Ly Son Island while seeking shelter from strong winds.
Shortly after, the boat’s captain, Mai Xuan Quynh, contacted the fishing vessel HT 90019 TS, owned by Mai Xuan Mien, also from Ha Tinh, for assistance.
As Mien’s boat approached HT 90409 TS, it also became stranded.
Because of rough waves, both stranded vessels were at risk of sinking, prompting eight crew members to abandon them and swim to shore.
Upon reaching the shore, the crew found Mien missing. They reported the incident to Ly Son Border Guard Station.
Authorities are searching for the missing man.
