214 people killed in traffic accidents during seven-day Tet holiday

A total of 214 people died and 504 others were injured in 541 traffic accidents that occurred in Vietnam during the seven-day Tet Lunar New Year holiday from February 8-14, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Four people are killed after two motorbikes collided with a truck while running on the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway on February 14.

The figures show an increase of 83 accidents and 177 injuries but a fall of 69 fatalities compared to the same period last year.

According to the committee, most of the accidents occurred on roads with 538 cases, causing 212 deaths. There were two railway accidents, leaving two dead and one injured. An accident occurred on the waterways, killing one.

Police nationwide dealt with 71,409 violation cases, issuing fines totalling over VND182.40 billion, seizing 1,864 automobiles, 34,082 motorbikes, and revoking 18,899 driving licences.

Nearly 29,100 drivers were fined for drunk driving, an increase of 21,373 cases compared to the 2023 Tet; while 16,756 others were found speeding.

One of the most serious traffic accidents occurred on the last day of the holiday on February 14 when two motorbikes collided with a truck on the Hanoi-Lao Cai Expressway, leaving four dead. Initial investigations showed that the four who were on two motorbikes had run in the wrong direction on the expressway when the accident occured.
