Students in many Vietnamese localities can stay home on Saturday to avoid super Yagi which is forecasted to make a landfall to some northern and northern central regions in the coming hours.

The list of areas includes Hanoi, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ha Nam, Phu Tho, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Haiphong and Quang Ninh.

Hanoi has asked schools and extra learning classes to close on September 7.

The northern province of Thai Binh has allowed local students to take shelter at home on September 6-7. Local schools must closely update the information about the typhoon and keep regular contact with concerned agencies to deal with possible risks.

Students in Bac Giang have been given a day off from school on September 7.

Meanwhile, Haiphong City and Quang Ninh Province, which are forecasted to be hardest hit by the storm, have requested that schools be closed from September 7 until the storm passes.

From today, September 6, schools on Co To Island in Quang Ninh and those in Haiphong that are being used as shelters for residents have been closed.

Typhoon Yagi is now roaring into the Gulf of Tonkin and is expected to blast the mainland of Vietnam on September 7 afternoon, the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported.

Meteorologists forecast that Yagi is likely to dump 200-350mm or even 500mm of rain on many localities across northern Vietnam over 24 hours.
