According to the Nam Giang Town People's Committee, the accident occurred at 5 pm on August 30 when the two boys, both aged nine, were swimming on the Dao River.

The boys' families did not see them return at 6 pm and went to the river to look for them. Rescue forces were also sent to the area and they found the bodies of the boys at 9.30 pm the same day.

Statistics from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs showed that some 2,000 children died from drowning in Vietnam every year. The number of rural child drownings was double that of urban areas, and 55 percent of drowned children were from families facing poverty.
