Vinamit’s plant in Binh Duong Province has resumed its operation after being closed for 20 days for environmental infractions.

The waste water discharging system of Vinamit was connected with the water drainage system of Becamex Company that leads to Mu u, Bung Cau streams then the Sai Gon River

According to a company statement, operations were resumed on September 14 after taking all appropriate measures. The plant’s operations had been suspended after they were caught illegally releasing waste-water into the environment.

According to Nguyen Lam Vien, General Director of Vinamit, environmental police punished them on August 22 for connecting their waste-water releasing system with the water drainage pipe system of Becamex Company. These actions were performed without any permission from Becamex.

Vien said that his plant had discharged only rain water and treated waste-water into the environment. However, his company wanted to show its responsibility towards the community by suspending the plant’s operation from August 24 until they had reached an agreement on sharing the water drainage system with Becamex.

On August 30, after a meeting with relevant parties, the People’s Committee of Binh Duong Province approved Vinamit’s formal proposal allowing the plant to connect its waste-water system with the water drainage system of Becamex. At this time it was mandated that Vinamit’s waste-water must be treated before releasing it into the drainage system of Becamex.

During a meeting on September 7 with Vinamit, the provincial Department of Natural Resources & Environment and Becamex Company, all participants verified that Vinamit had renovated their waste-water processing system according to regulated standards of the Environmental Protection Project.

Treated waste-water of Vinamit has also been inspected by the Monitoring Centre for Natural Resources & Environment of Binh Duong Province. The results revealed that treated waste water of the plant had met the requirements under which it’s allowed to be released into the environment.

Vinamit was also asked to build another ditch containing and monitoring rain water according to Becamex’s design to ensure that waste and rain water are separated when released into the water drainage system.

The construction of the connecting system and rain water ditch has been completed after 2 weeks allowing Vinamit to resume its operations.
