Danang’s municipal government is calling for the construction of underground car parking lots in a bid to mitigate traffic congestion in the city in the time to come.
Potential underground parking lot locations
The number of vehicles in Danang has sharply increased in recent years. The city recorded a total of 36,000 cars by the end of 2011, up from 18,000 in 2006 and from 11,000 in 2000.
Danang currently has nearly 600,000 motorbikes, compared to around 300,000 in 2005.
Even though the city has paid attention to the development of traffic infrastructure, it has failed to keep up with the boom in the number of vehicles, resulting in several traffic jams.
In order to prevent the traffic chaos afflicting Hanoi and HCM City, it’s vital for Danang to quickly develop underground parking lots, the municipal authorities urged.
Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee cum Director of the city’s Department of Construction, said local authorities have pointed out three potential locations for the construction of underground parking lots.
According to their study, an one-hectare underground parking lot could be built along road No. 2/9, a 1.3-hectare facility may be construction around the Park No. 29/3 on Dien Bien Phu road and another would be built nearby the junction of Tran Cao Van- Ong Ich Khiem-Dong Da, Tuan said.
The department also proposed studying some other locations to build more such as former Phan Chu Trin High School, the site of relocated Song Thu Company and Danang Station, he noted.
In order to realise the plans, the city will use part of its budget for the construction while raising the rest from local enterprises, he added.
