Two people detained in illegal iron ore export scam

Police have detained two people for being involved in the case of the illegal export scam of up to 56,781 tonnes of iron ore to China.

One of the two arrested people is Nguyen Thanh Chung, director of Diep Bao Anh JS Company in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.

56,781 tonnes of iron ore have been illegally exported to China


Following the investigation, the police found 79 customs declarations to export 79 batches which are 56,781 tonnes of iron ore worth a total VND60 billion (USD2.6 million).

However, the batches are in the list of products banned for being exported.

The investigation into the case is being expanded.

According to the General Department of Customs, in the first seven months of this year, Vietnam exported nearly 1.9 million tonnes of ores and minerals of different kinds, equal to the same period of last year. China has remained Vietnam’s biggest importer in this area.
