Rescue workers recover a body on March 18.

Binh Phuoc Police reported that the accident occurred at 3.30 pm on Sunday when three schoolgirls Tran Thi Yen, Tran Thi My, and Nguyen Phuong Hoai came to take photos at a dry river section about a kilometre from the discharge gate of the Can Don Hydropower Plant in Bu Dop District.

"The plant suddenly discharged water from the reservoir to the river at 4 pm and the strong current swept away the three girls," the report said. "Some people saw the incident and called the police who arrived and found the bodies of Yen and My late at night and early this morning. Meanwhile, Hoai's body was found on Monday afternoon."

Chairman of Bu Dop District People's Committee, Le Quang Oanh, said that notification of the water discharge had been issued earlier and was carried out following regulations.

"We've asked parents and schools to raise awareness among their children about the risks of drowning to avoid such tragic accidents," the official said.
