According to a report from Sam Son City, the amount of waste at the dump is now over 330,000 tonnes. Every day, it receives over 150 cubic metres of waste. The rubbish was buried, but the overloading has caused alarming environmental concerns to local residents and some surrounding ecological tourism and commercial projects.

"During this time, the number of people with respiratory diseases has increased over the past years, the report said. "Some households have moved to another place to avoid the pollution."

Following a proposal from Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Council, Sam Son City is preparing to remove the dump to a waste treatment plant in Quang Minh Commune. The removal project, which is estimated to cost VND 280 billion, is expected to completely address the pollution problem which has lasted for 25 years, and help boost economic and tourism development in the area.
