Six missing victims found after Thac Ba Lake boat capsize

Rescue teams have recovered the final victim in a boat accident on Thac Ba Lake that left six people missing, local authorities confirmed on Sunday.

According to the chairman of Bao Ai Commune People’s Committee, all six victims were found on February 22. They included an 11-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, a 43-year-old man and three women aged 46, 48 and 60.

The accident occurred at about 7.15 pm on February 21 on Thac Ba Lake in Bao Ai Commune, Lao Cai Province, when a stone-carrying ferry collided with a passenger boat carrying 23 people. The impact caused the passenger vessel to capsize.

Seventeen people were rescued and are reported to be in stable health.

Hundreds of rescuers were mobilised overnight on February 21 to search for the missing.

Thac Ba Lake is one of Vietnam’s three largest artificial lakes, covering nearly 20,000 hectares, with depths of up to 45 metres and more than 1,000 islands of varying sizes.
