According to the HCM City Customs Department, among these containers, 148 containers have been identified as ownerless, while management agencies are still seeking the owners of the remainder.

Old tyres are on the list of banned products imported into Vietnam, but between 2011 and 2013, the Ministry of Industry and Trade agreed on the temporary import and re-export of some products, including old tyres. But according to regulations, they should have been exported within 120 days.

It could prove very costly to destroy ownerless containers; so the General Customs Department has asked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to consider selling the old tyres to Viet Uc Environmental JS Company and DVA Renewable Energy JS Company.

Earlier, 560 abandoned tyre containers at Haiphong Port were sold to Vietnamese firms.
