NGOs step in to prevent bird flu

Two international organisations will provide loans and aid for Vietnam’s USD25-million bird flu prevention project.

VAHIP is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of veterinary and medical services.

The World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) will provide a loan of USD10 million for the Vietnam Avian and Human Influenza Control and Preparedness Project (VAHIP).

In the meantime, Avian and Human Influenza Facility (AHIF) will provide aid in the form of grants to the tune of USD13 million, and Vietnam will contribute USD2 million in reciprocal capital for the project.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the USD25 million funding for the project which will be extended in the period of 2011 and 2013.

VAHIP is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of veterinary and medical services in order to ease health risks of human and poultries to bird flu.

The project will be carried out in 11 cities and provinces including Lang Son, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh, Tay Ninh, Long An, Tien Giang and Dong Thap.

An earlier, similar project was carried out between 2007 and 2010 with a total funding of USD38 million.
