More than 21,000 foreign workers not yet return Vietnam

Up to 21,641 foreign workers have not yet returned to Vietnam to continue their work due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Up to 21,641 foreign workers have not yet returned to Vietnam to continue their work due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, by June 26, a total 93,425 foreigners had worked in Vietnam, including 21,641 who have not yet returned.

Most of 21,641 people are managers, experts and skilled workers.

In the first half of this year, the number of foreign workers in Vietnam dropped 23.16% on-year.

Agencies and companies of many countries in Vietnam have suggested prioritising 7,258 foreign workers to enter Vietnam, mostly those from China, Japan and South Korea. They work on some of Vietnam’s key projects.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affair will create the favourable conditions for granting work permits for them.

Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, former head of Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs, said the lack of staff for main positions would affect projects in Vietnam. She suggested that in many cases working online could help.

She noted that companies could consider replacing the vacancies with Vietnamese labourers.
