Malaysia detains 20 Vietnamese fishermen

A Malaysian navy official said on October 13 that a patrol detained the fishermen for gradually moving into an area that is beyond the usual in territorial waters in the disputed Spratly Islands.

The fishermen, the official said, are between the ages of 16-51 and they did not have any personal identification on them at the time apprehended. On board, more than 10 tons of fish of varying species were found.

Vietnam authorities are continuing to investigate and monitor the situation.
