A large area of forest at Kon Plong District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum Province has recently been destroyed.

According to local residents, the trees have been destroyed in various sites of between 1-2 hectares.

At one of the sites, all the trees, whether big or small were felled by loggers using chainsaws.

According to Bui Quoc Dong, head of the Kon Plong District Forest Rangers Department, they had inspected the sites and were hunting for the loggers.

"A total area of 11,400 square metres of forest in Mang Canh Commune have been destroyed," he said. "The forest is under the management of Mang Canh Commune People's Committee."

Chairman of Mang Canh Commune People's Committee, Mai Xuan Mau, said that the forest destruction was a very serious case.

"We are co-operating with related agencies to uncover the offenders who will be prosecuted," the official said. "In the coming time, we'll consider transferring forest land to companies for better management."
