Ill widow calls for help

A Muong ethnic group widow in Ninh Binh Province is calling for help for her two sons as she is in final stages of breast cancer.

Vuong Thi Huong's husband died from lung cancer nearly a decade ago. Then four years ago, the family was shocked to discover she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Huong now can only depend on morphine to ease the pain.

"It really hurts, I can't get up by myself anymore. I probably don't have much time left but how can I die now when my children are still small," she said. "I'm struggling to live for them but I don't know for how long I can go on like this."

As one of the poorest households in Village 7 located by Cuc Phuong National Park, they were given a charity house when their old one had severely deteriorated. But they don't have anything valuable to raise funds.

Pham Minh Cuong, head of Village 7 said, "Huong's previous house was also a charity house but its roof was weak and often blew away during heavy rain. Two years ago, the government gave them the money and villagers helped build a new house."

Nguyen Thi Diep, a teacher at Nho Quan A High School said Huong's oldest son, 15-year-old Trinh Van Duc, had already asked to leave school to take care of his mother. "We persuaded and encouraged him a lot and luckily, he has returned to school. We are also calling for help for his family," she said.
