Hanoi steps up drink-driving crackdown during World Cup

Traffic police in Hanoi issued more than VND 7.7 billion (USD 295,000) in fines for drink-driving violations over the past week and said enforcement would be intensified during the World Cup period.

Between June 11 and June 17, officers detected and handled 1,267 drink-driving cases across the capital, according to Hanoi's Traffic Police Department.

The violations involved seven car drivers, 1,200 motorcyclists and 60 operators of other vehicles.

Police said drink-driving checks would continue on major routes and in areas with high concentrations of restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

On the evening of June 17, officers conducting alcohol tests in Ha Dong Ward detected three motorcycle riders who exceeded the legal alcohol limit within little more than an hour.

The drivers admitted to consuming alcohol before getting on the road, police said.

Patrols and enforcement will be strengthened during the World Cup, when gatherings to watch football matches and alcohol consumption typically increase

Authorities urged residents not to drive after drinking and to choose safer means of transport to reduce the risk of traffic accidents.
