Guest workers need support

Many poor labourers can not fulfil their dreams of working abroad due to lack of money.

Workers apply to work abroad. The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs will propose policies to promote labour export.

"If labourers want to travel to South Korea for employment, each must pay a fee of USD700 for labour export companies," said Nguyen Trung Kien, head of Go Quao District\'s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

Kien was speaking at a meeting on labour-export promotion held in Kien Giang Province last week.

He said it was difficult for workers to pay such fees because the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies offers loans only to certain groups of people.

Moreover, labour-export companies do not properly prepare workers for their jobs abroad, said Tran Thanh Viet, deputy chairman of Giong Rieng District.

As a result, when encountering difficulties abroad, labourers are discouraged, violate regulations, and even run away to their homeland, he said.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said it would soon submit policies to promote labour export to the Government.

It would strengthen cooperation with labour-export companies to develop labour-export markets in the coming time.

According to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, about 60,000 Vietnamese are guest workers, mainly in South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan.
