Workers repairing the North-South 500kv transmission line
The monument will be built in an area of 1.4 hectares in Pleiku City in the central highlands province of Gia Lai.
According to the plan, the nine-metre stone monument project is estimated to cost VND108 billion (4.85 million). The project will also include exhibition rooms, meeting rooms and other functional areas.
The North-South 500kV transmission line was a milestone in Vietnam’s electricity sector which helps provide enough electricity for the southern region.
The line’s Circuit 1, built in two years from April 1992 to May 1994, stretches nearly 1,500 km through 14 provinces from the northern province of Hoa Binh to Ho Chi Minh City, and transmits around 2 billion kWh per year.
According to EVNNPT's deputy general director, Tran Quoc Lam, besides connecting three separate power systems in the north, centre and south, the 500kV transmission system helps ensure power supply for large cities and key economic zones.
"Some 12,000 experts, engineers and workers of various forces had joined in the construction, management and operation of the project and 250 of them died in their work," said EVNNPT. "There should be a monument to commemorate their sacrifice."
